Why are we so enthralled by celebrity romances? Probably because they are often followed by something even more sublime – celebrity engagement rings! Sophie Turner from Game of Thrones who plays character Sansa Stark, and her real-life love Joe Jonas recently became engaged with a stunning ring whose exact dimensions we can only speculate about -but more on that later.
From all media account, and the vague photos circulating of the ring we can tell that it is a pear-shaped diamond in a white gold or platinum split-shank setting. Let’s take a closer look at her ring and then see how we can re-create this style for less for anyone who has fallen hard for this look.
What Style is Sophie Turner’s Engagement Ring?
14kt White Gold Double Shank Pear Halo Engagement Ring from James Allen
From the photos we’ve seen, it looks like Sophie’s ring features 2 pavé bands and a pear-shaped center stone. The picture above shows a similar style from James Allen Rings. This style, where the bands appear to be split is called a “split shank”. These settings often feature pavé shanks and vary in how wide they are placed to each other. In Sophie’s engagement ring, the shanks are widely spaced and appear to only come together on the back side of the ring.
(The opposite of this style is the “X” style ring where the shanks come together under the center stone. Also popular right now.)
While we can’t tell from the celebrity photos if Sophie’s ring includes a halo or not – it is always a good choice if you’re looking to make your center stone stand out more (yes, I mean LOOK BIGGER!). A halo can add the appearance of a half-carat or more to the total size of your center stone. Perfect if you’re going for that “celebrity” bling factor.
This double-shank style is worthy of a celebrity engagement
How Big is Sophie Turner’s Engagement Ring?
Experts are estimating the size of Sophie Turner’s ring to be anywhere between 2-3.5 carats. So how much does a 3-carat pear-shaped diamond cost anyway? This one at James Allen has an H color, and VS2 Clarity and would run you $30,440. Far more than the average engagement ring purchased in 2016, which TheKnot estimates to be $6,163.
So, can you get Sophie Turner’s engagement ring style for $6,163 or less?
Pear Double Shank Setting from James Allen
Pear Split Shank Halo from James Allen
I was lucky to find this graceful split shank pavé halo setting on the James Allen website. While James Allen has 100s of settings available, they are not always all featured on the website at any given time. I came across this ring in their “Recently Purchased” ring gallery and was able to navigate to the setting page and share it with you.
In case you’re interested in this style, please visit the setting page and bookmark it so that you can come back to it at any time, even when it is not being featured on the website.
The price for this setting from James Allen is usually $4190, but since they are currently running their Mother’s Day Sale the setting is 25% off for the time being. So let’s start with the current setting price of $3142. That leaves us with a budget of $3021 for our Pear shaped diamond. Let’s see what we can find.
If you’d noticed on the engagement ring setting page, in the details they shared that the color of the Pavé stones is G-H, meaning that all of those small pavé stones will be in that same colorless range. I decided to set my selection criteria for the main diamond to the same G-H range for a seamless look.
I also set the budget slider to a maximum price of $3200, and set my clarity range from VS2 to VVS2. I could have gone for a more flawless diamond, but in the interest of getting as close to a 1-carat diamond as I could in my price range, I decided I could go down a little in clarity. Now, let’s look at the resulting diamonds and see what we can find.
This search resulted in 17 pear-shaped diamonds that met my criteria. But, since I’m looking for a celebrity-worthy replica, I’m going to focus on the stones on the larger side of my criteria. There were 4 diamonds that came in at 0.90 carats. If you mouse over the 3 dots on the bottom right-hand side of the image, all of the specs, including the grading lab, will appear as an overlay on top of the diamond image. Clicking into any of these will allow you to zoom in and see the diamond in 360-degree rotation. Still need help deciding? A James Allen diamond expert is on call to talk or chat with you 24-hours a day to help make the selection easier.
So there you have it. Celebrity style is easy to imitate, even on a budget. The hardest part is deciding what kind of wedding band to wear with this unique stlyle. If you have an ideas or suggestions, please write them in the comments!
