For those searching for fair trade diamonds for their design-your-own engagement ring, the task just got a little easier. Earlier this week, James Allen announced the availability of CanadaMark diamonds on their website. These fair trade gems are now part of their “Build Your Own” engagement ring tool. Yep, that’s right. Now you can purchase a CanadaMark diamond online at one of the top-rated online jewelers, from the comfort of your own home.
What Are CanadaMark Diamonds?
CanadaMark diamonds, mined from the Ekati and Diavik mines in Canada’s Northwest Territories, are known for their sustainable practices both in mining and support of the local aboriginal community. The mine owners invest in community projects to improve the lives of the local population while maintaining fair wages and skills development for them.
Previously, these diamonds were only available at retail locations where shoppers would be charged a significant markup. But James Allen, the premier online source for online diamonds and build-your-own engagement rings recently signed an agreement with Dominion Diamond Corporation, the producer of CandadaMark diamonds, to be the sole online distributor of these ethical gems.

The diamonds, formed billions of years ago in the Arctic tundra, are tracked and audited at every stage of production. They are each marked with a unique serial number to verify authenticity, maintain specific quality standards and origin records. This means that as a buyer, you’ll always be able to track your CanadaMark diamond to verify its authenticity via their online tool. The growing trend towards origin tracking of diamonds adds to the value of CanadaMark diamonds. With traceable serial numbers, buyers are assured that their stones are not blood diamonds and come from a conflict-free, fair trade mine. Should your diamond ever be lost or stolen, the microscopic engraving will verify your ownership and the stone’s origin.

While you may be able to find Canada Mark diamonds in select retailers, James Allen has the exclusive rights to distribute these gems online. For those not already familiar with James Allen, their award-winning website allows shoppers to fully customize their engagement ring and search for loose diamonds from their database of almost 100,000 stones. All gems on their site are photographed in high-definition with a 360-degree rotation feature. This allows shoppers to see the stones from every angle before purchasing.
Are CanadaMark Diamonds More Expensive
From what I’ve been reading online and in forums, it seems like the general opinion is that CanadaMark Canadian diamonds are more expensive than their counterpoints. While this may be true when walking into a retail outlet – salespeople look for any distinction to differentiate their inventory on in order to set prices on diamonds – I did not find this to be the case online.
Since James Allen is already known for having some of the best-priced diamonds online, I searched for similar diamonds to their CanadaMark inventory to see what the price differences were. There was only one case where 2 very similar diamonds had a price difference of 6% for no discernible difference in cut, color, clarity or other. In the other cases, I found prices to be comparable where stats were the same. Take a look at the examples I found.
A $20 difference between the two stones above seems a small price to pay for the added guarantee of a traceable, conflict-free diamond. What do you think?
Here, both the CanadaMark and conventional diamond were priced the same – stats were the same on both of these round, 0.70 carat H VVS1 Very Good cut diamonds.
This was the only pair of diamonds with a price difference that was significant that I found. I chatted with the gemologist from James Allen who was unable to explain the 5.6% price difference between these two stones. In this case, the only difference was the origin of these diamonds. The traceable nature of a fair-trade Canadian mined diamond fetches a small premium.

To shop these conflict-free, sustainable diamonds on their website, select the CanadaMark filter when searching the diamond database to only show these diamonds in your search results. In a general search, CanadaMark diamonds will appear with their easily identifiable blue trademark – – on the top left corner of each diamond image. Click on the listing to download both the GIA certification and the CanadaMark documentation for that specific diamond.
CanadaMark diamonds are cut in every shape. You’ll be able to find a pear, emerald, cushion or oval cut when you search the James Allen website. On my latest site search, they seemed to have far more round diamonds than any other shape, but those fancy shapes were all represented. No matter what shape you choose, the beauty of a CanadaMark lies in the ability to trace the origin of these stones and knowing that they are sustainable mined and follow fair-trade practices. Buy them and give them with peace of mind and enjoy the sparkle.
Combine this with 1000’s of engagement ring settings to suit any taste, their 24/7 customer service and Lifetime Warranty and you have a winning combination to create an ethical engagement ring she’ll treasure forever.
